Freyja the Falcon
Freyja the falcon is wall hanging sculpture made from driftwood found on local beaches. There are no screws or nails holding it together, rather it is made in the traditional way of the ancients- with wooden dowels and pressure. Each piece is held in place by every other piece, making it nearly indestructible. The eyes are black obsidian crystals. I do a lot of beach combing throughout the region and collect all of the interesting pieces of wood that I find. I bring them back to my workshop, organize them in a way that makes sense to me, and let inspiration be my guide as I open myself up to the universe and let the creativity flow. Freyja the Falcon is made from two different types of wood; the body/bird itself is made from hard woods, which have an extremely unique texture, color, and weight that is different than the other wood which is featured in the background. There, I used a more traditional style of driftwood, with the sun bleached tones and the twisted forms. Both are quite beautiful in their own right, and I feel their synergy in the piece really accentuates the strength and majesty of the falcon.
My process is humbling and teaches me the patience and faith as I can never just run down to the art store to pick up some more driftwood. It's a meticulous and ongoing process of constant searching. It seems haphazard but when things start to flow I can channel that energy and focus on a place where time and space stand still and I am a simple medium cohesively living and working within the process. I am a conduit of creative energy, and many times when I finish a work it takes days to really wrap my brain around what happened and how I did it. It's magical, and I find the results incredibly rewarding.
