My focus as a painter is to tell a story, and the language I use is light. My goal is to translate that light into color, form and atmosphere knowing that only painting from life reveals the true spirit and strong sense of place, when patiently studied with a paint brush in hand. It is both a passion and a challenge to react to the magical elements unfolding within a scene, while ignoring any preconceived feelings or visions.
While I’ve worked in a variety of mediums over the years, I now primarily focus on oils, as I love its ability to be manipulated on my canvas with expressive brush work.
Currently living in San Diego, but born and raised in Colorado, I am grateful for the opportunities beyond my University years to have studied with many master’s in the field including Watts Atelier, Ray Roberts, Jeremy Lipking, Roger Dale Brown, Eric Merrill and Calvin Liang. Many thanks to them and others who have had such a positive impact on my lifelong journey as an artist. I am honored that both my studio and plein air paintings from home and abroad have captured the attention of some very important collectors, including the San Diego Maritime Museum.

StatementCurrently living in San Diego but born and raised in Colorado, I am grateful for the opportunities beyond my University years to have studied with many Masters in the field of Plein Air and Studio painting. Painting from life has strongly influenced by work, it is seascapes and landscapes on location in the early morning, or under a full moon that inspire me the most. Also, it has been rewarding to lead members of Plein Air Painters of San Diego on Nocturne paint outs.
I have exhibited in several National Organization’s Museum Exhibitions including but not limited to: ASMA (Signature member), Oil Painters of America, California Art Club and Laguna Plein Air Painters Assoc. (LPAPA) where I have received honors for maritime related work. Invitationals which have included maritime paintings include The Thunderbird Foundation’s Maynard Dixon Events, The San Diego Maritime Museum and the 50th year Celebration for the Coronado/San Diego Bridge. Publications for Maritime work include: The Aspen Times, The San Diego Reader, Cover artist for Council of Colleges of Arts and Sciences magazine, and The Log from the SD Maritime Museum.
