I was the Biological Lab Manager at Palmer Station Antarctica in 1974. What? How did I get such an interesting position? Well, I got fired from my boring job selling cameras while completing my degree in biology. I went to the unemployment department and on the board was a 3x5 card listing a position as the Biological Lab Manager at McMurdo Station Antarctica. I did not get that position as it was already filled, but they offered me a job cleaning the mess hall. I didn't hesitate a second and took the job.  My mother always said "never venture never gain" The next year I was rewarded with the position at Palmer. Working in Antarctica changed my life forever.

Statement

Photos from space intrigue me.  The exquisite blue globe, our home, as seen from outside our normal field of vision inspired me to think of myself and my connection to earth in a holistic manner. The plastic bottle made for my convenience that ends up in our ocean, our home, as microplastics is very concerning.  The photos from space of our home remind me of an old cliche "don't poop where you eat". My hope is that the young people of the world come to understand that polluting our home is a recipe for disaster and work together to clean up our mess.
