Tey Lin

Tey Lin’s experience in both the professional and educational sectors of art spans more than twenty years. Tey began her art career as an illustrator. As her work evolved, she was able to combine her love of painting with her love of dogs, and in 2012 launched her own international dog portrait business. Since then she’s painted all sorts of pets and connected with animal lovers all over the world.

For the past 6 years, Tey worked as an Arts Educator for the City of Carlsbad sharing her love of art with others while instructing community members of all ages and abilities (from Preschool to Adults). Tey greatly enjoyed guiding curious minds as they explored the work of artists from around the globe, and treasured her time spent teaching art utilizing a multitude of media.

Tey continues her commissioned pet portrait business and is currently expanding her art practice to explore themes regarding nature and the beauty we have all around us.

As a longtime Carlsbad resident, Tey has volunteered extensively in the community in mentoring, leadership, teaching, and youth and school programs. She taught and coordinated elementary school art programs for many years, was a literacy program tutor for grade-schoolers with reading challenges, and spent time educating adults in free English as a Second Language classes in San Diego County. For several years Tey mentored young mothers through a parenting program, and she currently volunteers at Studio ACE, an Oceanside Art, Community, and Education non-profit.

Tey’s art-making and teaching style are both strongly influenced by her Latina culture. Her paintings honor nature, show love and reverence for our world, inspire storytelling and are intended to spark dialogue across generations about what is truly important in our lives.

Educated in the arts, Tey earned a B.F.A. in Illustration from Art Center College of Design in Pasadena, California, and a B.A. in Visual Arts from the University of California, San Diego.

Statement

My artwork gives me an opportunity to highlight the wonders in nature we often overlook. It tells you a story, shares a moment with you, helps you understand something about our world, and reminds you of things that are special in our everyday existence.
This triptych, “Mareas/Tides” is composed of three stylized, petite acrylic paintings on wood inspired by the designs that I see on our amazing coastline. I love to walk the beach looking closely at all that surrounds me. Each painting represents a small moment of beauty, one of the many facets of our unique coastal gem; intricately layered lines as the surf laps the sand, reflections of clouds over the ocean changing as the wind blows, and hidden sea creatures in deep shadows revealed by the ebbing tide. Focusing on the familiar, yet spectacular, elements of our beaches brings attention to the importance of protecting our coastal ecosystem for future generations.
I have happily been a professional artist for over 20 years, taught art in our community for over 10 years, and volunteered throughout the years for many San Diego county schools, organizations and programs. I have art degrees from Art Center College of Design, Pasadena, and UCSD.
