Ever since she was a child, Susan was always making things whether it was creating jewelry from sea shells, coloring scrap cloth with berries from the garden or digging adobe clay from the ground and making forms that could be “fired” when burning the trash (yes, that was allowed back in the day). As she got older and obtained a drivers license, her summers off from college would find her at the beach in Carlsbad body surfing or floating in the swells outside the waves and, of course, collecting shells. As a member of the Fallbrook Artists Association, she often jokes with her colleagues that she is doing the same things she used to do as a child only in a larger variety of mediums and in a more sophisticated way. She creates her art mostly in pastel, collage, mixed media and ceramics. Her art often reflects her love of the natural world.
My artwork, regardless of the medium used, often reflects my concern about caring for our planet so that it remains capable of supporting all forms of life. It is up to humans to learn and understand that our actions will determine whether we will be successful in this endeavor or fail. It is my hope that art may convey this challenge in a way that just words may not, and spur viewers to take positive actions towards a successful outcome.
